A Minivan and 1500 Miles: Our Christmas Vacation (Part One – Visiting Family)

Mom Blogging:

This year our son started kindergarten and our other son started preschool.  It was the first year we had to work around school schedules when planning our family vacation.  Christmas was on a weekend so we decided to take off the weekend before as well and have our vacation then.  It sounded like a wonderful idea!  We’d rent a minivan and drive north, making stops to see family, visit NYC to see all the famous Christmas things there, and end up in the snow which always puts us in the Christmas spirit!  It seemed like Christmas time would be the perfect time for our vacation!  I have to learn to think things through more.

The weeks before our vacation were absolutely crazy.  Thanksgiving, then putting together everything for our Christmas party a week later, and then just two weeks to put together everything for Christmas Day!  We wouldn’t be returning until Christmas Eve and we’d have family coming to stay over that same night.  We had to do all of our decorating, shopping, wrapping, baking, cleaning, making and sending our Christmas cards, planning the Christmas celebration for the class we teach for kids at our church, and all of our other Christmas traditions and preparations before vacation.  All of that while keeping busy shooting and editing family sessions to get everyone their images in time for them to use the pictures in their own Christmas cards and gifts!  I sent Jason out to get me coffee so often that the people at Starbucks would see him walk in and know what he was going to order before he’d even get to the counter!  They even took pity a few times and just walked a free coffee to him when the line was long.  But you can’t complain about an abundance of blessings!  Christmas is my favorite time of year so shopping and decorating and baking and parties and cards and holiday themed sessions might all be work but they are also fun and festive!  God is good and we came through it all in good spirits and ready to get away for a wonderful family vacation.

I had stayed up all night working the day before we left so the morning of our vacation Jason went to pick up the minivan from the rental car company and I finally started packing.  We were driving up but flying back so I had to pack with the airplane trip in mind.  Packing for a family of five, including 3 young kids who would be playing in the cold and snow, takes a lot of time and a lot of room in the car!  Not only did we have all the sweaters, coats, gloves, boots, and cold weather clothes but we also had snacks and games and stuff for the long car rides in between our stops.  My sister was joining us on the trip so we also had her stuff, and the Christmas gifts we were bringing to drop off with family we were seeing too.  All efficiently planned out and packed to fit in the least number of suitcases for our plane ride home.  Needless to say we didn’t end up leaving until that evening.

Other than a little car sickness, and thanks to the two new portable DVD players we bought, the kids were all great in the car.  We stopped the first night and by early in the afternoon of day two we were far enough north that we finally saw snow on the ground!  When we stopped for gas the kids took advantage of the time to run right to the snow to play.  Though it was more of an icy sludge, they had fun.

**DISCLAIMER:  The pictures throughout this entire blog post are a combination of Jason’s camera, our point and shoot camera, and there are even a few from a cell phone camera:).

It was our daughter’s first time in the snow and she was excited to grab a handful and check it out!

She soon learned that it is better to wear gloves when picking up ice and snow.

We arrived that evening to visit family near DC.  We were all so excited to see Grammy and Grandpa!  The kids ran right up and there were lots of hugs.  When they went inside, there were toys all over the place waiting for the kids!  Not only did they get to play with all the toys, but they also helped put together the Nativity set and decorate the tree.  There were even personalized ornaments for each of us!  Then the kids got to open a present from Grammy and Grandpa.  It was fun to share in some Christmas traditions with them.

Before we left for the hotel, even though it was dark the boys had to go out to playing in the snow.  And the snowball wars began!  They are throwing those at me and at their aunt as we hide behind the bushes and cars!

The next morning we were back at Grammy and Grandpa’s.  After breakfast Grammy had the boys bake and decorate Christmas cookies with her.  I don’t think she knew what she was in for when she handed them tubes of icing and a giant shaker of sprinkles!  She still tried one out when the boys were done thought.  Our boys were snacking on raisins as they worked and those soon ended up on cookies too.  Grandpa wasn’t easily convinced to try an icing and raisin cookie with sprinkles but the boys got their aunt to try one out.  She said it wasn’t too bad!

In between baking and decorating, the kids went downstairs to play pool and to golf.

That afternoon we met up with more friends and family.  It was wonderful seeing everyone!

That evening we went to Mass at the church where Jason and I were married and then we spent our last night there at Grammy and Grandpa’s snuggled on the couches watching the movie A Christmas Story all together as a family.  There was snow outside and home made apple pie and hot chocolate to enjoy.  All the chaos leading up to the vacation was far from our minds.  It was exactly the kind of night we had in mind when we pictured a vacation just before Christmas, and it made everything worth it.  Thanks to Grammy and Grandpa for a terrific time!

Our time in NYC and Vermont, and the wonderful sessions Jason photographed in NYC, are still to come!  Be sure to keep checking the blog for lots of updates this week!

Lisa’s Maternity Session in New York City

One of the things we like most about visiting New York City are the wonderful people we know there.  Dad photographed Lisa and Joe’s engagement session in New York City and then their wedding here in Florida.  During our trip to NYC just before Christmas dad met up with Lisa and Joe again for Lisa’s maternity session!  We were so happy for them when we heard that they were expecting and it was really special for dad to be there to photograph the maternity session.  He met them at Rockefeller Plaza to get some of the quintessential pictures of New York City at Christmas.  Lisa and Joe are amazing people.  We know if we lived near them we’d be hang out lots!  We wish them all the best as they look forward to their new addition!  We can’t wait to hear the good news!

Boston Wedding at the Black Rock Country Club: Cindy and Bruce

Dad could not wait for Cindy and Bruce’s wedding and he had such an awesome time!  Dad knew they were a terrific couple from the fun time he had with them at their engagement session, so he knew that their wedding would be great no matter what.  But dad was even more excited because he got to join them for their wedding in Boston!  There is nothing better than autumn in New England.

Dad started the weekend by joining the couple for their rehearsal dinner at the Boston Marriott Quincy.  He loved seeing pictures from the engagement session used on many of the details.  Cindy and Bruce’s family and friends were all so nice and so excited for the bride and groom on the eve of their wedding!

The next morning dad was at the Boston Marriott Quincy again as the couple got ready.  Leslie of Planned Perfectly was the couple’s wedding planner and dad enjoyed working with her.  Focal Point Cinematic was the videographer and they were also from out of state.  Cindy had her hair and makeup done by Carolina of From Hair to Eternity.  Cindy wore her hair in loose curls pinned back on the top.  She was such a pretty bride!  She lit up the room with the smile she wore all day long.

With the wedding taking place at the start of fall in Massachusetts, the couple had a fall theme for their big day.  The wedding colors were brown and orange but Cindy and Bruce brightened it up with accents of a crisp apple green.  Jen of The Tangled Web was the florist and put together the orange and green bouquets and boutonnieres.  Mom’s favorite was the orange floral centerpieces on top of floating green apples.  Everything went so well together!

The wedding was held at the Black Rock Country Club in Hingham.  DJ Jeanie from Curtis Knight Entertainment was the DJ for the reception.  The cake was made by Konditor Meister.  To go with their fall theme, the couple had brown linens with gold plates and at every place setting was a caramel apple as the favors.  Along with the floral and apple centerpieces there were centerpieces made up of a group of tall candles with a green base surrounded by orange flower petals.  The reception room looked gorgeous.

Cindy and Bruce, dad had an absolutely amazing time with the two of you and all of your family and friends!  Thank you so much for having him there to share in your wedding weekend.  The wedding was beautiful and the love the two of you share is just as beautiful.  Enjoy your Hawaiian honeymoon!

Dad took the couple out during the reception for some pictures by the fire pit.  We promise that we did not photoshop the fire to create this image!  Can you see what mom and dad saw when they first looked at this picture?  How cool is that?!!

Cozumel, Mexico Wedding: Cruise with Jamie and Tommy

Two and a half years ago, dad was in New York to photograph the fabulous wedding of Shannon and Duane.  It was one of dad’s favorite weddings!  The church was gorgeous, dad had lots of time to take the bride and groom around for pictures, the bride grabbed the mic for an impassioned rendition of “Ice, Ice Baby”at the reception, wedding crashers were invited in to come party with the family, and the bride and groom met up with dad just after sunrise the next morning to jump in a lake in their wedding attire!  But of course more importantly Shannon and Duane are kind, down-to-earth, fun people and dad really enjoyed spending time with them and their families.  He was happy when he got the news that they were expecting and we all got to meet Shannon when we were visiting New York and dad photographed her maternity session.  She had her session on a rooftop garden in Rockefeller Center where she worked and we even got a quick  tour of a few of the studios in the building!

When Shannon told us that her sister Jamie was getting married on a cruise, dad really wanted to be there to share in another important day for this family.  He felt very blessed when things worked out and he was able to join Jamie and Tommy and their close family and friends on a cruise to the Keys and Cozumel for the wedding!  Things were all set for the wedding day when the ship docked in the Keys, and then for more pictures the next day in Cozumel.  Then a week before the wedding, Jamie got the news that the ship was canceling the stop at Key West!  Mom says the email Jamie sent out says everything about what a wonderful couple Jamie and Tommy are.  They told everyone, “When life gives you lemons, add Tequila and head straight for Cozumel!”  Because everything was planned for that stop, Jamie and Tommy had to put everything together again for a wedding the following day at Cozumel.  It was wonderful to see how positive they were when many other couples would have let the stress bring them down.  Instead, Jamie, Tommy, and all of their guests squeezed those lemons and limes and it was Tequila time!

Shannon and Duane’s little girl has gotten so big!

The ceremony at a hotel in Cozumel:

Jamie had a nautical theme and the bridesmaids all carried beach balls instead of bouquets (much easier to get through customs than flowers!)

Khaki and navy are so pretty together.  The groomsmen wore navy shirts and khaki pants.

Jamie and her dad taking a swim.  Mom thinks Jamie should have worn the flippers around the rest of the day!

Jamie and Tommy taking the plunge…literally!  Soon after this, almost everyone was in the water!

Mom’s favorite picture because she says it summarizes the day perfectly.  Beautiful and romantic, yet you can tell it was quite a party too!

Thank you so much to Jamie, Tommy, and their family and friends for having dad there to share in such an wonderful trip.  He had a blast and said everyone was terrific!  Congratulations newlyweds, and we hope your future holds all the happiness, beauty, love, and celebration that your wedding did!

Chelsea and Justin’s Wedding Part Three: Day After Shoot in Las Vegas

The day after Chelsea and Justin’s wedding, they got back into their wedding clothes and headed out for more pictures.  The strip, casinos, and Elvis…it was definitely a Vegas style session!

Thanks again to Chelsea and Justin for having dad join you for your trip.  Dad said it was awesome and he came back with so many funny stories about his time with you two and your families.  Everyone was so wonderful to him and made him feel like he was just another friend there to celebrate the wedding.  We hope you two stay in touch as the years go on!
